5 Reasons for Dry, Itchy Skin in Fall and Winter

Fall and winter are two amazingly beautiful seasons. The leaves change and fall as a chill fills the air. The smell of the holidays echoes through homes and closets switch over from carrying skimpy bathing suits to warm and comfy sweaters. Unfortunately, though, this seasonal transition is not all pumpkin spice and caramel apples. It can cause discomfort of the skin, too. Specifically, it can lead to dry and itchy skin that is as annoying as it is unsightly. So, just why does this occur during that time of year? The following are five reasons for dry, itchy skin in fall and winter.

1. Dry Air

One of the main reasons that dry skin occurs in the winter and fall months is because winds at this time of year tend to be very dry. Dry air in the atmosphere leads to drying out of the skin, which causes flaking, cracking, and other issues. Therefore, more and more individuals find themselves struggling with their skin when the moisture of humid summers fades away.

2. Forced Air

Homes in the winter months tend to rely on forced air out of a heater to stay warm. These airs can be equally if not more dry than the natural air. Therefore, there is no reprieve from less moisturized air. This results in the aforementioned skin issues that occur from being outside in the elements.

3. Cold Winds

Both cold and quick moving air can be a double whammy on the skin. It can lead to redness from the cold and the force alone can dry out the pours. Therefore, the hands, face, and other areas of skin exposed to the elements can become very dried out and painful.

4. Drinks are Caffeinated

Sure, caffeinated drinks in the summer can be just as easily drank but virtually all hot drinks in the winter months contain some level of caffeine. From cocoa, to hot coffee, to hot tea, these drinks all contain caffeine. Caffeine, as it is processed by the body, dries out the skin as well as any elements outside. Therefore, the combination of both the outside elements and the consumables such as these drinks can result in extremely dry skin.

5. Textiles and Materials

Many winter clothes rely on thicker and more insulated textiles and materials. They look great and can keep the body warm. But, they can also dry the skin and cause irritation. Fabrics like wool and other “itchy” fabrics can irritate already dry skin, adding to the problem. Therefore, this is a common reason for dry skin in the winter.
