6 Reasons Your Skin Is Blotchy

Your face is your window to the world and putting up a mesmerizing front is what we aspire for. However, despite our efforts to glean a clear, radiant, and smooth skin with an even skin tone, certain factors can wreak havoc on the skin and leave it looking blotchy, and exasperatingly red. While we can’t put our finger on a single culprit for skin discoloration, there could be a plethora of reasons standing between you and a dazzling, clear complexion. Here are the 6 most common reasons for blotchy skin that, despite being frustrating, are fortunately curable:

1)    You Tend to Over-Exfoliate

Exfoliation is indispensable to scour off the dead skin cells that have accumulated on the skin and trigger the growth of new cells for an evenly toned complexion. However, it is easy to go overboard with exfoliation which can rub your sensitive skin cells the wrong way and strip the skin of its natural moisturizing oils, resulting in the appearance of red, itchy patches on the face. Remember, that it is your face you are scrubbing, and not a greasy pot. To avert causing splotches on your face, steer clear of gritty scrubs containing rough exfoliator, such as seeds or kernels, and avoid using harsh chemical peels. Instead, try to use a gentle exfoliator, such as one incorporating sugars or micro beads.

2)    Your Skin is Over-Sensitive

People with sensitive skin often complain of skin tightness, burning, and blotchy areas of redness. Over sensitivity is caused by a flawed stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin, which allows irritants to penetrate easily and irritate the delicate skin cells. Certain skin care products, incorporating harsh chemicals, alcohol, or fragrances, can aggravate the condition. Using harsh soaps and cleansers can weaken your skin barrier by stripping the skin of ceramides, natural oils, and healthy fatty acids; a perfect recipe for dry and blotchy skin (or disaster)! Try to use a hydrating, PH neutral, and non-soap cleanser or gentle skin cleansing facial wipes to cleanse the skin of impurities.

3)    You Moisturize Your Skin with Fragrant Products

No matter how much you love to delve in the opulent aromas of your body butters and exquisitely scented body lotions, parting with them might be your solution to waving the skin blotches goodbye. Unfortunately, fragranced products are a harsh irritant on skin, especially for people which skin blemishes. Even worse, if you experience an uncomfortable rash, it could develop in to Eczema. Besides, red wine, other foods can set off Rosacea as well, including spices, caffeine, and even citrus fruits. To thwart your face from turning in to a burger patty at dinners, sip water in between cocktails to flush the alcohol out before it reaches your face!

5)    You Skimp on Sunscreen

Protected exposure to damaging UV rays can cause more damage to your skin that you can appreciate. From showing signs of aging, your skin would become tender and spotted with red blemishes. The cure in this case is a piece of cake; wearing a sun block, with an SPF of 30 or more, before stepping out in to the scorching sun, can protect your skin from sun damage. In addition limiting sun time exposure and wearing a hat for added protection goes a long way in protecting your skin.

6)    Exercising

While this is no excuse to skip gym, strenuous workouts can trigger splotches on the skin. During cardio training, the body temperature and heart rate elevate, and heart increases the blood flow to all vital organs, including the skin. To ward off your post-Zumba glow, try cooling off your skin by putting ice cubes in the back of your mouth, which is teeming with sensors. In addition, you can spray on anti-inflammatory, mineral induced spring water on your face to alleviate redness and even out your skin tone.
