Acne is a scourge that many people have to deal with. Generally, acne appears in teenagers during puberty, and for women once a month when they have their menstrual cycle. However, some people struggle with acne all through adulthood. There are many methods for getting rid of acne including adjusting one’s nutritional intake. While making dietary changes most likely will not cure acne it can offer a marked improvement to the appearance of the skin. Here are a few foods that can help improve your skin and reduce the severity of acne flair-ups.

Water

While not technically a food, water is vital to skin health. The average person should consume at least 8 glasses of water a day. If you struggle with acne it should be even more. Drinking water helps to hydrate your body and flush out the toxins. This leaves the skin looking and feeling more healthy and vibrant.

Fruits

Raw fruits are full of vitamins A, C and E – all vitamins that are vital to healthy glowing skin. Raw fruit also has a high natural water content that can help keep you hydrated between meals and in between glasses of water. Berries also contain skin protecting phytochemicals. Fruits can be enjoyed throughout the day and make a great snack.

Vegetables

Dark leafy vegetables are rich in vitamins A, B, K, E and D which are beneficial to your skin. Typically the darker the vegetables, the better they are for you. Raw vegetables provide the most health benefits for your skin. A large salad at lunchtime is the perfect way to get more greens in your diet, but be careful not to drench that salad with heavy dressings. Kale, Swiss chard, broccoli, spinach, and arugula all make wonderful salad ingredients.

Coconut Oil

It might sound odd to incorporate oil in your diet if you are trying to avoid oily skin, but coconut oil is a good oil. Eating a tablespoon of raw virgin coconut oil a day can help improve the overall look of your skin. Since coconut oil is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial, many people have also had success applying raw coconut oil to their faces daily to reduce acne as well.
