Acne can occur at any age and can really affect your confidence. Whether you suffer from mild or severe acne, knowing the correct skin care tips and advice can really help you to improve the appearance of your complexion. Here we show you several ways you can improve acne prone skin.

How does acne occur?

Acne occurs when glands in the skin produce too much sebum causing skin follicles to become blocked. Harmless bacteria that lives on the skin can infect blocked follicles, resulting in red and sore blemishes. Several factors can contribute to blemishes, such as oily skin, diet and hormones. Luckily, blemishes can be treated and cared for to make the complexion look clearer.

What skincare products should I use?

Finding the perfect skincare products for you may be a challenge as many products can feel harsh. It’s best to choose a product with your skin type in mind. It’s also a good idea to choose a product that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as these ingredients are known to help clear up blemishes.

Choose an oil free moisturiser which won’t clog pores and will gently hydrate to keep your skin feeling soft and smooth. You could also try an exfoliating toner with glycolic acid, which will help remove dead skin cells and bring newer skin cells to the surface.

What else can I do?

Make sure you wash your makeup brushes regularly in clean, warm soapy water to remove dirt and grime. Makeup brushes can harbor bacteria, so it’s important to keep your brushes as clean as possible. You should also remove your makeup before going to bed as leaving your makeup on overnight can cause spots. To remove makeup effectively, use a micellar lotion or a cream cleanser with a warm, damp cloth.

Changing your pillowcase regularly will also lower the amount of bacteria transferred to your face. You should also avoid touching your face too during the day as dirt and bacteria on your hands can transfer to your face. If you suffer from acne, you’ll also want to clean your phone regularly as bacteria can build up on the face of your phone, causing spots to the side of the face. Simply use a hand sanitizer and wipe over your phone screen before removing with a tissue. It’ll keep your phone clean and free of dirt and grime.

How should I protect my skin?

It’s best to avoid exposure to the sun if you’re using acne treatments as some products can cause sensitivity to sunlight. The sun is very damaging for the skin and won’t improve acne so avoid it as much as you can.

What should I eat?

Eating a balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables is highly recommended. Try to cut out sugar if possible and up your intake of whole grains, oily fish and nuts which contain nutrients to help improve the complexion.
