What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a facial skin condition that usually affects those with fair skin. Normally it’s those who are reaching menopause or blush easily, however it can also affect men and those with darker skin tones too.

What are the symptoms?

Flushing of the skin and frequent redness.

Redness that doesn’t fade.

Spots that may resemble acne.

Visible blood vessels.

Some people may have red or watery eyes, dry or rough skin, red skin patches and swelling.

How to care for the skin

Avoid eating hot spicy food that can cause flare ups of the skin.

Avoid exposure to hot or cold weather conditions. These can irritate the skin and cause dryness and red patches. Make sure you wear an SPF in warm weather and protect your face in extreme cold weather.

Avoid hot baths as warm temperatures can increase redness in the skin.

Avoid drinking too much alcohol as it can result in skin flare ups.

Try not to partake in extreme exercise. Instead do gentle walking, swimming or yoga which won’t trigger hot flushes.

Try to keep calm as stress can cause redness and irritated skin to occur. Try to eat healthily, relax and get eight hours sleep per day.

The best products for your skin

For your skincare routine, use a gentle cleanser aimed at sensitive skin types. Calming cream cleansers will help to soothe and calm redness and irritation. Wash your face with warm water to avoid temperatures that may cause a flare up.

For your moisturizer, choose one aimed at redness or sensitive skin. You’ll need to use products that won’t react with the skin and will help to hydrate to smooth and nourish any dry skin patches. It’s also a good idea to use a primer or moisturizer before applying your foundation in order to help neutralize the redness in your skin and calm any irritations.

If you use foundation then opt for a yellow toned foundation to help to tone down the redness in your skin. A mineral foundation is extra gentle and can be gently buffed into the skin with a soft kabuki brush. It’s also a good idea to use concealer afterwards for extra coverage. You could use yellow or green toned concealers as both shades will help to neutralize redness in the skin.

If you want to use blush, then use it sparingly. Apply a dot of crème blush over the apples of the cheeks and blend. If you need to freshen up your makeup during the day then try a yellow toned setting powder to hide any redness and absorb any excess oil.
