How Stress Can Affect Your Skin

shutterstock_228991438Stress plays a huge part in our daily lives and it can cause havoc on our bodies, including our skin. What effects does stress have on the skin? Stress can create many problems for our skin and it’s important to understand how and why in order to care for our skin in the best way possible.

What are the results of stress on the skin?

Stress causes your body to release a chemical called cortisol which makes your skin produce more oil, leading to blemishes. The body can also become more reactive which results in more skin problems, such as rosacea and eczema. Other rashes may also occur as well as your body becoming more susceptible to illness and allergies. When your body is ill, it generally causes your skin to look dull, dry or sore.

You may find that you suffer from itchy skin when you’re stressed. This is due to the outer, protective layer of the skin becoming impaired which results in harmful bacteria reaching deeper layers of the skin. This bacteria produces a protein that can lead to eczema and psoriasis.

Severe dermatitis can occur due to stress making the body susceptible to allergies. You may also find that you suffer with more cold sores when you’re stressed as your immune levels become weaker.

The main effects you may notice on your skin due to stress are frown lines and fine lines as the skin becomes dryer and weaker due to evaporating fluids on the lipid barrier of the skin. It can also take longer for skin cells to renew themselves which means dead skin cells build up on the surface of the skin, resulting in a dull and uneven skin tone.

What can I do to reduce the effects of stress on the skin?

Due to our daily busy lifestyles, it’s impossible to avoid stress completely but knowing how to handle it can improve the effects of stress on your skin and body.

  1. 1. Use skincare. Make sure you cleanse, tone and moisturize every day. If your skin is oily then use a deep cleansing facial cleanser or clay mask to help absorb excess sebum and clear any blemishes. Follow with an exfoliating toner which contains glycolic acid to help remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Use a good moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated, soft and smooth.
  2. Exercise. You don’t need to partake in rigorous exercise to beat stress. Taking a walk, gentle running or swimming are all good ways to help you relax and maintain a healthy lifestyle. You could also try yoga or pilates too.
  3. Take a bath, listen to music or read a book. Taking some time out of your busy schedule will help you to keep calm and relaxed.
  4. Sleep well. Try to get at least eight hours sleep per night. Not getting enough sleep can cause low concentration, low energy levels and headaches, so it’s really important to get as much sleep as possible.
  5. Try breathing exercises or meditation. Both are great for helping you to stay calm.
